PREVENT SPLIT ENDS & PROTECT YOUR HAIR
Split ends occur when the protective outer layer of your hair, the cuticle, becomes damaged or eroded, causing the hair to split into two or more strands. The result? A frizzy, lifeless appearance that can make even the most well-cared-for locks seem lackluster.
Curly & coily types are more prone to split ends than other types of hair. This is due to the propensity for dryness (due to curl patterns). In other words, although your scalp may be producing an ample amount of sebum (a naturally moisturizing oil), that sebum may not be reaching the ends of your hair. This can leave tips without moisture, making them susceptible to breakage & split ends.
WHAT CAUSES SPLIT ENDS IN NATURAL HAIR?
Split ends are often caused by a variety of factor. Natural hair is vulnerable to multiple stressors that can cause split ends including:
- Heat Styling- Minimizing how often you apply heat to your hair will help prevent damage to your cuticles.
- Brushing your hair while its dry- Brushing your hair when its dry can damage your cuticle & cause frizz. It can also disrupt your natural curl pattern & stretch your hair cuticle. This then leads to hair breakage & split ends.
- Protective Styles that are too tight- Sometimes your seemingly perfectly executed hairstyles are tighter than necessary, which can over-stretch your hair follicles & cause split ends & breakage. When creating your protective hairstyle, be conscious so you can ensure a flawless look, protect your hair & step out as the hair care-conscious queen (or king) you are.
- Rubbing your hair with a towel to dry- Although it may seem efficient at times, rubbing your wet hair with a towel can lead to excess friction on your hair’s cuticles. When you have too much friction, this could lift your cuticles, leading to frizz, potential breakage & split ends. Instead try wrapping your hair in a microfiber towel after your shower. The tiny fibers are more efficient at absorbing the water in your hair &b won’t rough up your cuticles in the process.
- Overbrushing your hair- Yes, you can indeed overbrush your hair. This tends to have a negative consequence on our curls. We recommend combing or brushing your hair sparingly, like on days you detangle your hair or directly after washing.
HOW TO PROTECT YOUR CURLS FROM SPLIT ENDS?
- Regular Trims- Schedule regular hair trims every 6-8 weeks to remove existing split ends and prevent them from traveling up the hair shaft. This maintenance step is essential for healthy curls.
- Gentle Handling- Treat your curls with care. Use a wide-toothed comb or a detangling brush designed for curly hair to avoid unnecessary breakage and stress on your locks. Avoid vigorous brushing or combing.
- Hydration is Vital- Keep your curls well-hydrated by using a high-quality conditioner after every wash. Consider incorporating a deep conditioning treatment into your routine at least once a week to provide extra moisture and prevent dryness that can lead to split ends.
- Heat Styling Precautions- Minimize the use of heat styling tools, as excessive heat can damage curls and cause split ends. When necessary, use a heat protectant spray to shield your hair from high temperatures, and opt for lower heat settings.
- Silk Bonnets- Sleep in silk or satin bonnets to reduce friction and minimize the risk of developing split ends while you rest. These materials are gentler on your hair compared to cotton.
